New monkeypoxcase reported in city

KARACHI:

Another confirmed case of mpox has surfaced in the metropolis, with an infectious diseases expert at Aga Khan Hospital verifying the development. The patient is currently under treatment at the facility.

Dr Fatima Mir, speaking to The Express Tribune, said investigations into suspected cases are ongoing in various parts of Sindh, including the Khairpur district, with initial reports suggesting that some cases may test positive. She added that the provincial government's relevant health authorities are actively monitoring the situation.

Mpox is a viral illness primarily transmitted through close skin-to-skin contact. Patients typically develop a blister-like rash that begins as spots and progresses into firm lesions. In some instances, transmission may also occur through respiratory droplets.

Dr Mir added that the disease mostly affects adults and that no specific treatment is currently available in Pakistan. However, symptoms such as fever, body aches and painful skin lesions are managed through supportive care, including pain and fever control, and oxygen support in severe cases.

She urged the public to adopt precautionary measures, warning that direct contact with infected individuals without protective gear such as gloves and masks could increase the risk of transmission.
