Elizabeth Banks hails Elle Fanning as perfect young Effie in ‘Hunger Games’ prequel
Elizabeth Banks has voiced her enthusiastic approval of Elle Fanning portraying a young Effie Trinket in the upcoming ‘Hunger Games’ prequel, ‘Sunrise on the Reaping.’ Banks, who originally played Effie in the four-film series, attended the premiere of her new Peacock series, ‘The Miniature Wife,’ where she shared her excitement about the casting news.
‘I was so excited,’ Banks said, describing Fanning as ‘perfect casting’ for the role. She added that the fans had long hoped to see Fanning take on the character, and she was thrilled the choice aligned with audience expectations. Fanning previously revealed that Banks congratulated her with a bouquet of flowers and a note featuring the franchise’s iconic phrase, ‘May the odds be in your favor,’ signed, ‘All love, Elizabeth Banks.’
Directed by Francis Lawrence, ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ focuses on Effie’s early life as a stylist for District 12 Tribute Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, ahead of the 50th Hunger Games. The prequel features a star-studded cast including Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, Billy Porter as her estranged husband, and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow. Other cast members include Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Maya Hawke, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Lili Taylor, Ben Wang, Molly McCann, and Iona Bell. Original franchise stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are also expected to make appearances.
Banks also discussed her Peacock series, ‘The Miniature Wife,’ in which she plays a woman accidentally shrunk to six inches by her scientist husband, portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen. The series blends absurdist comedy with relational drama, exploring dynamics in an exaggerated, miniature form. Banks shared that the CGI used to shrink her was impressive, and she described her experience as vulnerable yet rewarding. A six-inch doll stand-in was used on set to aid her co-stars during filming.
‘The Miniature Wife’ is set to premiere all ten episodes on Peacock on April 9, while excitement builds for ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ which promises to explore Effie’s backstory and District 12’s role in the 50th Hunger Games, bridging fans from the original series with fresh storytelling and a talented ensemble cast.
