‘The Batman II’ brings back Andy Serkis as Alfred amid expanding ensemble

Andy Serkis will return as Alfred in The Batman II, joining the production later this year as filming begins in London

Andy Serkis is officially returning as Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman II, with production on the highly anticipated sequel set to begin this June in London.

Serkis, who first portrayed Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler in The Batman, is expected to reprise the role while balancing a packed schedule. The actor is simultaneously working on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which he is directing, but reports suggest he will be able to manage both commitments.

In recent interviews, Serkis hinted that his return is all but confirmed, noting that scheduling is being worked out and that he is likely to join the production later in the filming timeline rather than at the start.

He joins an expanding ensemble that includes Colin Farrell, who will reprise his role as the Penguin following his acclaimed performance and the success of The Penguin. The sequel is also bringing in major new additions, with Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan joining the cast, the latter reportedly set to play Harvey Dent.

Directed once again by Matt Reeves, The Batman II is expected to build on the success of its predecessor, which earned over $772 million worldwide and helped redefine the character with a darker, more grounded tone.

Outside of Gotham, Serkis has also been promoting his latest directorial project, Animal Farm, which is set to release on May 1.

With returning fan-favorite characters and high-profile newcomers, The Batman II is shaping up to be one of DC’s most anticipated upcoming releases.
