Luigi Mangione’s federal trial in UnitedHealthcare CEO killing delayed to 2027

The federal trial of Luigi Mangione in the killing of Brian Thompson has been delayed once again, with proceedings now set to begin in early 2027.
A judge in New York pushed the federal trial to January 2027, with jury selection scheduled for January 5 and opening statements expected later that month. The delay follows a separate ruling that moved Mangione’s state trial to September 8.
Mangione, 27, has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges stemming from the December 2024 shooting in Midtown Manhattan.
If convicted, he could face life in prison. However, earlier rulings removed the possibility of the death penalty in the federal case, and a terrorism-related enhancement was also dismissed from the state charges.
No specific reason was given for the latest delay, though the defense had requested additional time.
The case remains ongoing as both trials move forward on separate timelines.
