Expert says Duggars' handling of sibling abuse may have 'escalated' the Joseph Duggar case

An expert in trauma and abuse says the way the famous Duggar family responded to past sibling sexual abuse may have contributed to ongoing issues, raising fresh scrutiny amid the recent arrest of Joseph Duggar on child molestation charges.

According to People, trauma therapist Shari Botwin criticized how Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar addressed allegations against their oldest son, Josh Duggar, who was later convicted on child sex abuse material charges in 2021.

Rather than seeking professional mental health care, the couple sent Josh to a religious program with prayer and manual labour instead of clinical treatment. “Right there, red flags go up,” Botwin said, adding that the lack of proper therapeutic intervention was concerning. “As soon as somebody says something happened to them within the family, unless the parents and all those involved get into intensive long-term therapy … the patterns are going to repeat.”

Botwin explained that minimizing abuse and avoiding open discussions can inadvertently perpetuate harmful behaviors. “It’s so complicated when it’s your kid. … You can’t break generational abuse or abuse within a family unless you deal with it appropriately,” she said, stressing that long-term therapy is essential for real healing.

Her comments come as Joseph Duggar faces multiple charges tied to alleged molestation of a 9-year-old girl during a 2020 family vacation, a case that has drawn intense public and media attention. The arrest followed decades of scrutiny over the Duggar family’s history with abuse allegations and their highly publicized reality TV presence.

In response to Joseph’s arrest, his sister Jana Duggar broke her silence on social media, writing that the family “had no prior knowledge before it became public” and expressing heartbreak over the situation. “Our hearts are with the child who has been harmed, this is a grievous and unacceptable wrong,” she stated, adding that the family continues to pray for the victim and for justice to be served.

Other Duggar siblings have also publicly condemned the alleged actions. For example, Jessa Duggar described the situation as “heartbreaking” and labeled the alleged conduct a “profound wrong,” emphasizing the pain it brings to the family and wider community.

The expert’s analysis underscores growing concerns that the family’s past handling of abuse may have lacked transparency and proper professional intervention, and that addressing trauma openly and with appropriate care is vital to prevent further harm.
