Lord of the Rings Hunt for Gollum confirms new Aragorn casting plans
Andy Serkis confirms Aragorn recast in Hunt for Gollum as new Lord of the Rings film moves forward

Viggo Mortensen will not return as Aragorn in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, with director Andy Serkis confirming that the iconic role is being recast.
The announcement marks a significant shift for the expanding The Lord of the Rings universe as new films move forward.
Speaking in a recent interview, Serkis revealed that the production team is actively searching for a new actor to portray Aragorn. While no casting details have been finalized, he noted that discussions are underway and progress is being made.
The film will take place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, focusing on both a physical and psychological pursuit of Gollum. Serkis will reprise his role as the character while also directing the project.
So far, Kate Winslet is the only confirmed new addition to the cast, though her role remains undisclosed. Franchise veterans Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen are rumored to return as Frodo and Gandalf, respectively, although no official confirmation has been made.
The project is being produced by Peter Jackson alongside longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Production is expected to begin later this year as part of a broader plan to develop multiple new films within the Middle-earth franchise.
“The Hunt for Gollum” is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027, positioning it as one of the most anticipated fantasy films in development.
