Jensen Ackles is opening up about the emotional, and slightly nerve-wracking, experience of reuniting with his former Supernatural co-stars on The Boys.

Ackles, who plays Soldier Boy on The Boys, revealed that he felt unexpectedly anxious watching Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins join the show’s fifth and final season.

“I was nervous to have them on,” Ackles shared in a recent interview, quickly clarifying that his concern came from a place of deep care. After nearly two decades of friendship, formed during their time on Supernatural—he simply wanted them to succeed.

“We’re kind of friends for life,” Ackles said, reflecting on their long-standing bond, which has extended beyond the show through conventions and regular catch-ups.

He even compared the experience to “watching your son go up to bat for the first time,” emphasizing both his pride and protective instincts. Fortunately, he noted that both actors “did great” in their new, still-undisclosed roles.

Still, stepping into unfamiliar territory together wasn’t entirely seamless. Ackles admitted it initially felt strange acting alongside Padalecki and Collins as different characters after years of playing the Winchester brothers and Castiel.

“It took us a few takes to kind of shake that out,” he said, highlighting the adjustment from their Supernatural dynamic to the chaotic world of The Boys.

And chaos is exactly what fans should expect. Ackles teased that their scenes are “disgusting” and “outrageous,” very much in line with the show’s over-the-top tone.

The reunion itself was orchestrated by Eric Kripke, who created Supernatural and now serves as the showrunner for The Boys. Known for frequently collaborating with familiar faces, Kripke saw an opportunity to bring the trio back together for one final ride.

With the final season set to premiere soon, Ackles says he’s excited for fans to see the reunion unfold, even if it took a moment for the cast to find their footing in a very different universe.

“It was a really good time,” he said.
