Punjab reviews steps for Vaisakhi festival

Thousands of local, foreign Sikh pilgrims expected across key religious sites

LAHORE:

The Punjab government has reviewed preparations for the 327th Vaisakhi festival, with authorities outlining comprehensive security, transport and hospitality arrangements for thousands of Sikh pilgrims expected next month.

The high-level meeting, held at the provincial Home Department, was chaired by Provincial Ministers Khawaja Salman Rafique and Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora.

Officials informed the meeting that the Vaisakhi celebrations will be held from April 10 to 19.

Around 20,000 local pilgrims are expected to participate, along with approximately 3,000 visitors from India and another 3,000 from other countries.

Pilgrims will visit key religious sites across Punjab, including Lahore, Nankana Sahib, Hasan Abdal, Eminabad, Farooqabad and Kartarpur.

Addressing the meeting, Rafique said the government was finalising "foolproof arrangements" to ensure the safety and comfort of visitors.

He added that pilgrims from across the world would be hosted in accordance with their traditions, with special measures for secure accommodation and smooth travel.

Arora described Vaisakhi as a global festival and emphasised the importance of projecting a positive image of Pakistan through coordinated efforts. He also directed officials to ensure that personnel assisting pilgrims remain mindful of religious sensitivities.

Authorities were instructed to ensure that all transport vehicles carry valid fitness certificates, while luxury buses will be arranged to facilitate travel between religious sites. Additional counters for senior citizens and the Federal Investigation Agency will be set up to manage the influx of visitors.

The meeting also stressed the provision of essential facilities, including medical services, ambulances, large-scale langar (community meals), air-conditioned marquees and uninterrupted electricity supply.

Currency exchange services through authorised dealers will also be made available.

Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmad Javed Qazi said that efficient arrangements for international pilgrims were vital for enhancing Pakistan's global image. He directed the administration and police to ensure comprehensive security and logistical support at all venues.

Representatives from key departments, including police, health, transport, Rescue 1122, customs, the FIA, Rangers and motorway police, briefed the meeting on preparedness.
