In a significant development in the political landscape of Khuzdar, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the by-election for National Assembly constituency NA-256 Khuzdar, which was due to be held on April 5.
The decision was taken on the formal request of the Balochistan government, which expressed serious concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation, rising terrorism threats, and increased militant activities in the region.
According to the Home Department of the Balochistan government, holding the poll under current circumstances would pose a grave risk to the safety of voters, candidates, polling staff, and election materials. The request referenced reports from intelligence agencies, district administration, and law enforcement authorities highlighting a surge in terrorist incidents, use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and growing tribal tensions in Khuzdar, Zehri, Mula, Wadh, Nal, and surrounding areas.
Recent attacks on railways and roads in the province, the large number of sensitive polling stations, and shortage of security resources had left the administration deeply concerned. A meeting of the District Intelligence Coordination Committee, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of Khuzdar, had also recommended postponing the by-election.
The provincial government maintained that a peaceful environment is essential for holding free, fair, and transparent elections, an atmosphere that is currently not available in the area.
The NA-256 seat fell vacant after the resignation of Sardar Akhtar Jan Mengal, chief of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M). The ECP had earlier announced the polling date for April 5, but the worsening security situation forced a last-minute reversal.
Political parties have responded with mixed reactions to the postponement. While some parties supported the government's decision in the interest of public safety, others criticised it as political interference.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) strongly opposed the move, stating that elections should not be delayed under any circumstances. Local residents, however, appeared relieved. Speaking on condition of anonymity, one resident of Khuzdar said: "The situation is so bad that people are hesitant even to step out of their homes. If the election were held now, not only would voter turnout be extremely low, but there is also a high risk of a major tragedy."
