HBO Baldur’s Gate series update as Craig Mazin focuses on The Last of Us season 3
HBO confirms Baldur’s Gate series remains in development as Craig Mazin completes The Last of Us season 3

HBO has provided an update on its upcoming Baldur’s Gate series, with the project expected to move forward after the completion of The Last of Us season 3.
The post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us, based on the Naughty Dog video game franchise, premiered in 2023 and became a major success for the network.
A third season is currently in production in Vancouver and is targeting a 2027 release. According to HBO and Max Content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys, the series is expected to conclude with its third season.
"I believe that's where Craig is thinking," Bloys said regarding season 3 being the show's final outing. "We always leave the door open, but I believe that's where he is thinking."
Bloys also confirmed that Craig Mazin, who co-created The Last of Us, has shown a strong interest in developing a Baldur’s Gate adaptation. The project was officially announced earlier this year and is based on the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
"Anything that Craig is interested in, I'm interested in," Bloys said.
However, development on the fantasy series will not progress significantly until Mazin completes work on The Last of Us season 3.
Bloys explained that the showrunner remains focused on delivering a conclusion to the current series before shifting attention to the new project.
"Obviously, he's deep into season 3 of The Last of Us – but Baldur’s Gate was something he brought to us. He's very passionate about it, and he's thinking about it, and we've talked about it, but he's going to focus on The Last of Us, and then come back to [Baldur’s Gate] when he's got more time."
