The finale of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette delivers an emotional portrayal of the tragic 1999 plane crash, but notably stops short of showing the accident itself.

The final episode, titled “Search and Recovery,” focuses on the moments leading up to the crash that killed John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette, and her sister Lauren Bessette.

In the episode, John, who is piloting the plane, becomes increasingly anxious as he attempts to descend toward Martha’s Vineyard amid poor visibility. Carolyn tries to calm him in the cockpit, telling him to stay focused as tension builds.

Rather than depicting the crash directly, the scene ends on close-up shots of the three passengers before cutting to black, leaving the moment of impact unseen.

The aftermath then shifts to the response on the ground, including the U.S. Coast Guard being alerted to the missing plane and members of the Kennedy and Bessette families learning the devastating news.

The remainder of the finale centers on grief and remembrance, showing family members gathering for a memorial and scattering the victims’ ashes at sea.

The FX limited series, which premiered in February, traces the relationship between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette throughout the 1990s, culminating in the real-life tragedy that ended their lives on July 16, 1999.

By choosing not to show the crash itself, the series instead emphasises the emotional weight of the moment and its aftermath, closing the story on a somber and reflective note.
