Andrew Garfield has described watching the Harry Potter films as “controversial,” citing concerns about indirectly supporting J.K. Rowling amid ongoing public debate surrounding her views.

Speaking during an interview on My Life In Movies, Garfield revealed that he had only recently watched the globally popular franchise for the first time. While praising the performances—particularly that of Daniel Radcliffe—he acknowledged the ethical dilemma some viewers feel.

“I know it’s controversial,” Garfield said, adding that engaging with the franchise could be seen as “putting money in the pocket” of someone tied to what he described as “inhumane legislation.” Although he did not directly name Rowling, his comments clearly alluded to her public stance on gender identity issues.

The controversy stems from Rowling’s involvement in debates around transgender rights, including her reported financial support for advocacy groups such as For Women Scotland. A legal case backed by the group contributed to a 2025 UK Supreme Court ruling defining “woman” based on biological sex.

Garfield’s remarks come at a time when the Harry Potter franchise is re-entering the spotlight, with a new television adaptation in development. Rowling recently expressed excitement about the project, even as fan reactions remain divided.
