Jameela Jamil has raised questions about the intense wave of media coverage surrounding Chappell Roan, suggesting it may not be entirely organic.
In a TikTok posted by Jamil, she speculated that the growing scrutiny of Roan could reflect a broader pattern of backlash against outspoken artists who challenge industry norms and advocate for social causes. “I can’t say this for sure,” she said, “but I was just wondering if it’s possible that this is a targeted smear campaign.”
Roan has been vocal on a range of issues, including LGBTQ+ rights, feminism, immigration, and artist mental health. She has also spoken openly about maintaining boundaries with fame, emphasizing that she does not want to be a pop star “24 hours a day” and prefers to keep her private life separate from her stage persona.
Jamil pointed to what she described as a disproportionate level of coverage, claiming that “over 125 articles” had been published about Roan in just a few days. She contrasted this with comparatively limited coverage of other celebrities facing controversies, including Shia LaBeouf, noting that “only seven articles were written about him” during a recent incident.
The actress suggested that Roan’s outspoken advocacy and refusal to conform to traditional industry expectations may be contributing to the heightened attention. She highlighted the singer’s stance on creative control, her criticism of industry exploitation, and her rejection of the “male gaze” in her work.
Jamil also referenced Roan’s decision to leave a major agency, saying she did so “loudly and publicly,” as well as her willingness to speak out on global political issues and the treatment of artists by media and paparazzi.
“She does buck the system,” Jamil said, adding that Roan’s continued success while challenging industry norms could make her a disruptive figure. 'It feels a bit organised. I could be totally wrong,' the actor concluded her TikTok.
