'Blade Runner 2099' series confirmed as no sequel planned for 'Blade Runner 2049'

'Blade Runner 2099' series launches in 2026 as no sequel film is planned for 'Blade Runner 2049'

Blade Runner 2049 will not receive a direct film sequel, while a new series titled Blade Runner 2099 is set to premiere on Prime Video in 2026, expanding the franchise through a different format.

The upcoming limited series is set 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, placing the story in the year 2099. It introduces a new cast and narrative direction, focusing on a future version of Los Angeles and a new group of characters.

Director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed that a follow-up film will not be produced. The 2017 film received critical recognition but generated less than $260 million globally against a reported budget of $150 million, which contributed to decisions around the franchise’s cinematic future.

Blade Runner 2099 represents a shift towards streaming as the primary platform for continuing the story. The series stars Michelle Yeoh as Olwen and Hunter Schafer as Cora, a fugitive replicant. Supporting cast members include Tom Burke, Lewis Gribben and Dimitri Abold.

The production is overseen by executive producer Ridley Scott, who directed the original Blade Runner film. Jeremy Podeswa directs the series, with filming completed in 2024 following production in Prague.

The narrative is expected to explore developments in replicant technology and the evolving relationship between humans and artificial beings, continuing themes established in earlier entries in the franchise.

The move to a television format allows for a broader exploration of the Blade Runner universe, with the series structured to present a new storyline rather than directly continuing previous plots.

While some reports have indicated that future film projects are not currently planned, the performance and reception of Blade Runner 2099 may influence potential developments for the franchise.

The series is scheduled to release on Prime Video later in 2026.
