Ayesha Curry is setting the record straight on a long-running narrative about her relationship with husband Stephen Curry, and taking accountability for how it started.
While appearing on the IMO podcast alongside Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, Ayesha addressed the widely circulated claim that Steph “wasn’t her type.” Sitting next to the NBA star, she clarified that the story has been misunderstood for years.
“It’s not that you didn’t have game,” she told Steph. “I was 14 years old, I was not allowed to talk to boys.”

At the time, Ayesha admitted she made assumptions about athletes, influenced by stereotypes she had seen in movies. She even had a firm “no athletes” rule when imagining her future partner, something she now laughs about.
Looking back, Ayesha didn’t shy away from her earlier remarks, calling them “very disrespectful” and “rude.” She explained that her mindset as a teenager was more about protecting herself than rejecting Steph.
What many interpreted as disinterest, she says, was actually insecurity. Steph was “Mr. Cool,” and instead of believing he could be interested in her, she assumed he only saw her as a friend.
That perception eventually changed after the two reconnected years later. Steph’s persistence, showing up consistently and spending time with her family, helped shift things. Once they were honest about their feelings, their connection quickly deepened.
The pair went on to marry in 2011 and have since built a life together with their four children, becoming one of the most admired couples in sports and entertainment.
