Bridgerton star Hannah Dodd has revealed she is unsure how the show will adapt Francesca Bridgerton’s storyline in season 5 following the widely discussed gender swap of her love interest.
Speaking in a recent Netflix interview, Dodd shared that Francesca is entering a new phase after the death of her husband, John Stirling, which concluded a major arc in the previous season. The actress described the character as being “on her own” and navigating how to start again, setting up an emotional foundation for the upcoming season.
Netflix has confirmed that Francesca will take center stage in season 5, which continues the series’ pattern of focusing on a different Bridgerton sibling each installment. However, Dodd admitted she has “no idea” how the adaptation will unfold, adding to fan anticipation.
The show, based on Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked, originally follows Francesca’s romance with Michael Stirling. In the series, the character has been reimagined as Michaela, portrayed by Masali Baduza, marking a significant shift from the source material.
The change sparked mixed reactions among fans, prompting showrunner Jess Brownell to defend the creative decision. Brownell emphasized that the series remains committed to themes of inclusivity and love, rejecting any form of discrimination within its storytelling.
Quinn has also supported the adaptation, noting that viewers can still revisit the original book version if they prefer. She highlighted that the emotional core of the story remains intact, particularly the shared grief over John’s death.
Bridgerton season 5 is expected to span eight episodes and will take place years after the previous events, with Francesca reentering society while confronting her evolving feelings.
