A koala has died after being allegedly tied to a vehicle and dragged through a residential street in Australia, in what wildlife rescuers are calling a “brazen” and deeply disturbing act of cruelty.

According to People, the incident occurred on March 25 in Koroit, a small town in Victoria. A volunteer from Mosswood Wildlife, a local rescue organization, was called to the scene after reports of an injured animal.

When the koala was found, it had suffered severe injuries, including deep abrasions and a shattered jaw. The animal was described as “gurgling blood” when উদ্ধার teams arrived, highlighting the extent of its trauma.

Investigators say the koala had allegedly been tied around the neck with a rope, which was then attached to a vehicle before it was dragged along the road. Witnesses reported seeing a trail of blood and fur along the street, indicating the animal had been pulled for some distance.

The injured koala was taken into care but had to be euthanised due to the severity of its injuries, with rescuers saying there was no chance of recovery.

Colleen Edwards, a volunteer manager at Mosswood Wildlife, described the incident as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty she had encountered. She said the act was intentional and took place in broad daylight, adding, “It wasn’t an accident. It was a choice.”

Authorities, including Victoria Police and the Conservation Regulator, have launched an investigation. Edwards confirmed that the individual allegedly responsible has been identified, and wildlife advocates are now calling for strict legal consequences.

The rescue organisation has urged anyone with footage or information, including dashcam or home security video, to come forward to assist with the investigation.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for stronger protections for native wildlife and accountability for acts of animal cruelty.
