Duffy’s first on-camera interview to explore trauma and return to public life in new Disney+ documentary

Duffy, the Welsh singer-songwriter who rose to fame with her 2008 hit ‘Mercy,’ is preparing to share her story in a new Disney+ documentary, marking her first in-depth on-camera interview since her sudden retreat from music. The announcement came during Series Mania when Angela Jain, Disney+’s head of content for EMEA, described the feature as a “really powerful project” that demands careful and sensitive handling.

In 2020, Duffy revealed in a social media post that she had stepped away from her career in 2011 following a harrowing kidnapping and assault. At the time, she explained that she was drugged at a restaurant on her birthday and held for four weeks in a foreign country by a perpetrator who threatened her life. Fearing for her safety, she initially refrained from contacting authorities, eventually coming forward once she felt able to do so.

“She has entrusted us with her story, so we really have a huge responsibility to handle this with care and sensitivity, because she’s speaking about what happened to her for the first time,” Jain said. Duffy’s story highlights the personal and psychological toll the experience took on her, explaining why she disappeared from the public eye for over a decade.

In addition to discussing her trauma, the documentary will explore Duffy’s absence from the music industry. After the kidnapping, she stepped back entirely from recording and performing. Her brief updates over the years offered glimpses into her struggle, but she has not shared the full scope of her experience publicly until now. In a prior 3,000-word post, she described the fear, isolation, and uncertainty she felt, while also expressing hope for the future. “I’m doing this to be freed, for all of me to be freed. What follows remains to be seen,” Duffy wrote.

Production on the documentary is set to begin soon, with Disney+ promising a sensitive and comprehensive examination of Duffy’s life, trauma, and resilience. For fans of the singer and those interested in stories of survival and personal strength, the feature-length film represents her first major opportunity to tell her story in her own words, offering insight into both her disappearance and her return to public life.
