‘Normalising’ Operations: Pakistan Railways may rent locomotives

The official said a proposal was under consideration to hire locomotives from India.

ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Railways (PR) is considering a proposal to hire locomotives from different countries in order to normalise its operations. According to an official of the ministry of railways, PR is facing an acute shortage of locomotives which has significantly contributed to the delaying of trains on most major routes. The official said a proposal was under consideration to hire locomotives from India, which will be finalised after the government approves it. He said a comprehensive action plan in this regard has already been approved by a high-level meeting chaired by Minister for Railways Ghulam Ahmad Bilour. He added that the proposal has been discussed with the Indian authorities, who have expressed their interest. The official however added that there was a possibility that the locomotives might be purchased from other countries.
