Filtration plant tube well goes defunct

.

RAWALPINDI:

The central tube well of Union Council 46, Naya Mohalla, has become non-functional, while all taps from the adjacent water filtration plant have been stolen by drug addicts.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) appears helpless in restoring both facilities, forcing residents—especially women—to fetch water from far-flung areas.

Residents staged a protest demonstration over the water crisis a day earlier. The Naya Mohalla water filtration plant and tube well are located near MC Girls High School. The filtration plant has remained closed for the past three months after all its taps were stolen, and no effort has been made to restore it. Meanwhile, the tube well has also been out of order for the past month.

The contractor responsible for repairs stated that due to drought, the underground water level has fallen below 700 feet. Existing tube wells, which range between 300 to 550 feet in depth, have started to fail and need further deepening.

Naya Mohalla also has a commercial area, and shopkeepers are equally affected by the water shortage.
