Jeremy O. Harris, the acclaimed playwright behind Slave Play, was involved in a heated confrontation with Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, at the Vanity Fair Oscar party on Sunday night.
Harris, who had had a few drinks, reportedly called Altman a Nazi, drawing attention from the A-list crowd, including Michael B. Jordan, Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner.
Sources tell Page Six, the Emily in Paris actor accused Altman of being the "[Joseph] Goebbels of the Trump administration" due to OpenAI's recent deal with the US Department of War.
It remains unclear how Altman responded at the time, and no official statement has been issued by either Altman or OpenAI regarding the incident.
Earlier this month, OpenAI outlined updates to its agreement with the Department of War, emphasising limitations on how its artificial intelligence tools may be used. The company stated that its systems would not be deployed for domestic surveillance, autonomous weapons control, or decision-making without human oversight. The updated terms also highlighted compliance with US legal frameworks, including constitutional protections and national security laws.
In a subsequent clarification to a media outlet, Harris acknowledged his remarks, stating: “It was late and I had a few too many martinis so I misspoke when I said Goebbels… I should’ve said Friedrich Flick.”
Flick was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg Trials.
Altman reportedly responded calmly to the confrontation. The incident comes after OpenAI signed a deal with the Pentagon to provide AI for classified government systems, sparking backlash among employees and critics.
