Sarah Michelle Gellar is speaking out about the abrupt end of the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, revealing that even those involved didn’t expect it to fall apart.
In a recent interview, Gellar said the cancellation blindsided the team after years of development. “Nobody saw this coming,” she shared, describing how the project, which had been in the works for years, was suddenly scrapped.
According to Gellar, the reboot faced challenges from the start, calling it “an uphill battle” behind the scenes. She also pointed to a key issue: a decision-maker involved in the project who wasn’t a fan of the original series, which made moving forward more difficult.
The reboot, which was being developed for Hulu, would have seen Gellar return as Buffy Summers in a recurring role while introducing a new slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao was attached to direct and executive produce the pilot.
Gellar had previously been hesitant to revisit the iconic role she played from 1997 to 2003, but said Zhao’s passion convinced her to come on board. Despite the project’s cancellation, she expressed pride in the work they had done and gratitude for fan support.
While the future of the reboot remains uncertain, especially with rights tied to Disney, Gellar emphasized that the legacy of Buffy still stands strong, even if this particular revival didn’t make it to screen.
