The 2026 Academy Awards delivered the usual mix of glamour and celebration, but the ceremony also produced several awkward and unexpected moments that quickly circulated online.
One of the earliest came when Sean Penn was announced as Best Supporting Actor but did not attend the ceremony. Presenter Kieran Culkin accepted the award on his behalf and remarked, “Sean Penn couldn’t be here this evening — or didn’t want to — so I’ll be accepting the award on his behalf.”

Technical interruptions also affected other winners during the ceremony. KPop Demon Hunters producer Michelle Wong was played off by music during her acceptance speech for Best Animated Feature. Later in the evening, the orchestra again interrupted the team behind the film when they won Best Original Song, cutting off the moment as co-writers attempted to speak.

The red carpet also generated discussion, particularly when entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary appeared wearing a necklace valued at millions of dollars featuring diamonds and rubies and Iranian director Jafar Panahi reacted with an unimpressed expression. His appearance and promotional remarks during interviews attracted attention online.

Host Conan O’Brien’s monologue created additional talking points. During one segment he referenced a scene involving Timothée Chalamet in Marty Supreme, prompting cameras to cut to the actor and Kylie Jenner in the audience.
O’Brien also attempted to connect with younger viewers through a segment referencing online slang and gaming culture, which drew mixed reactions from viewers.

Other moments included a camera cutting to actor Delroy Lindo while Wagner Moura was still speaking during the Best Casting presentation, as well as discussion around several red carpet fashion choices.
Together, the incidents formed a collection of memorable moments from the ceremony, highlighting how live broadcasts of major events can produce both celebratory and awkward scenes.
