Actor Michael B. Jordan delivered an emotional and reflective acceptance speech after winning Best Actor at the 98th Academy Awards for his performance in Sinners.

Jordan earned the honor for portraying twin brothers Smoke and Stack in the film directed by Ryan Coogler, marking the first Academy Award of his career and a major milestone after years of acclaimed performances.

Taking the stage at the Dolby Theatre, Jordan appeared visibly moved as he began thanking the people who helped shape his career.

“I stand here because of the people that came before me,” he said, before paying tribute to a number of Black artists who paved the way in Hollywood.

Jordan specifically named legends including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith and Halle Berry, crediting them for opening doors for the next generation.

Jordan also expressed heartfelt gratitude to his longtime collaborator Coogler, with whom he has worked on several projects throughout his career.

“Ryan, thank you for trusting me with this story,” he said, adding that the director has continually challenged him to grow as an actor.

The actor went on to thank the cast and crew of Sinners, describing the project as a deeply personal and collaborative effort. He also took a moment to recognize his family and supporters who stood by him throughout his journey in the entertainment industry.
