Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece continues to expand as the streamer confirms a third season while several related projects across the franchise remain in development.
The popular series recently returned with its second season, reigniting interest in the long-running pirate adventure based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga. For viewers wondering whether the story will continue, Netflix confirmed in August 2025 that One Piece had been renewed for a third season, with production beginning in South Africa in November 2025.
The announcement also confirmed that the Straw Hat pirates will reunite for filming alongside returning cast members from the second season, including Charithra Chandran and Mikaela Hoover. Joe Manganiello, Lera Abova and Sendhil Ramamurthy have also been promoted to series regulars, with Manganiello’s character Mr. Zero expected to play a larger role.
While plot details remain under wraps, the final moments of season two hinted at major developments involving the Baroque Works organisation, which are expected to be explored further when the series returns.
The upcoming season will also introduce new characters to the live-action adaptation. Xolo Maridueña has been cast as Portgas D. Ace, while Tony Award-winning Oh Mary! creator Cole Escola will appear as Bon Clay, a theatrical assassin.
Netflix is also developing another adaptation of the story. In 2023, the company announced an animated remake titled The One Piece, which will revisit storylines from the original anime while presenting a new interpretation of the narrative. The project is being developed with one of the Japanese animation studios that worked on early seasons of Attack On Titan.
Beyond television, the original manga continues to grow. One Piece received a Guinness World Record in 2015 for “the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author”. Author Eiichiro Oda continues to release new chapters regularly, with One Piece 1177 scheduled for publication on 22 March.
The character Tony Tony Chopper is also receiving additional attention following the live-action series. A new website dedicated to the character will host stand-alone adventures featuring the talking reindeer navigating everyday situations, alongside content across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
Meanwhile, the long-running anime remains active. After a short hiatus earlier this year, the series is scheduled to return in April 2026 with an adaptation of the manga’s Elbaph arc. The programme, which began in 1997, now typically releases around 26 episodes each year.
Another project, One Piece: Heroines, will premiere in July 2026 on Fuji TV. The single-episode special is based on the eight-chapter novel series and will focus on Nami’s story, with Robin also appearing briefly.
The first two seasons of Netflix’s live-action One Piece are currently available to stream.
