Maya Rudolph is set to make her Broadway debut in the Tony-winning play Oh, Mary!, taking on the role of Mary Todd Lincoln for an eight-week engagement beginning April 28. Rudolph steps into the role originated by Cole Escola, joining a prestigious list of actors including John Cameron Mitchell, Jinkx Monsoon, Jane Krakowski, Tituss Burgess, Betty Gilpin and Hannah Solow.

In Escola’s reimagining, Mary is portrayed as a wannabe cabaret star with a penchant for drinking. The play earned critical acclaim, with Escola winning a Tony Award for their performance and Sam Pinkleton earning a Tony for direction.

“Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of being Cole Escola,” Rudolph said. “Oh, Mary! is the funniest play I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of plays, you’d be surprised. It’s such an honor to play the role of Mary, especially after so many iconic Marys have come before me. Making my Broadway debut in the role of a lifetime – as a miserable, suffocated, alcoholic woman – is a real dream come true.”

Rudolph currently stars in the Apple TV+ series Loot and voices Connie the Hormone Mistress on the animated hit Big Mouth.

The Broadway production has extended its run through January 3, 2027, and continues to play on the West End, with a North American tour launching in Hartford, Connecticut in September 2026. The play originally opened on Broadway on July 11, 2024, at the Lyceum Theatre and has been celebrated for its sharp humour, inventive staging, and irreverent take on historical figures.

Rudolph’s debut marks a major career milestone as she joins the ranks of Broadway performers who have brought Escola’s vision to life, bringing her signature comedic timing and unique voice to one of theatre’s most hilariously tragic roles.
