Journalist Jeff Gerstmann says unannounced Fallout project at Microsoft-owned studio may be cancelled

A previously unannounced Fallout game reportedly in development at a Microsoft-owned studio may have been cancelled, according to journalist Jeff Gerstmann.

Gerstmann discussed the project during an episode of The Jeff Gerstmann Show, stating that he had been aware of a Fallout project being developed outside of Bethesda that he believes will not be released.

“There was a Fallout thing in development at another Microsoft-owned studio that I think is no longer going to see the light of day,” Gerstmann said during the podcast.

No further details about the project were provided, including its scale, development stage or gameplay direction.

As a result, it is unclear whether the reported project was intended to be a major entry in the series or a smaller title similar in scope to previous spin-offs.

Bethesda has not formally announced any new Fallout games since Microsoft acquired the company. The publisher has also not confirmed any new projects tied to the franchise following the release of the Fallout television adaptation on Amazon Prime.

During the same discussion, Gerstmann also commented on long-running speculation about a Fallout 3 remaster. He said he believes that the project has been assigned to an external development team.

“I think that has been outsourced to an external studio,” Gerstmann said.

Such an approach would mirror the development structure used for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which was produced by Virtuos rather than Bethesda’s internal studios.

Rumours surrounding potential Fallout announcements have circulated throughout the year. Last week, developer Iron Galaxy shared an image on social media that some interpreted as hinting at a new Fallout reveal. The post was later linked to an update for Fallout 76.

Earlier speculation among fans also suggested that the finale of Season 2 of the Fallout television series on Amazon Prime could coincide with announcements of Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas remasters, although no such reveal occurred.

More recently, toy listings have reportedly referenced a Fallout 3 remaster by name in their product descriptions, adding further speculation about the project.
