Hollywood’s awards season is heading toward a tense finale as Sinners and One Battle After Another emerge as the main contenders going into the 2026 Academy Awards.
Ryan Coogler’s supernatural drama Sinners has already made Oscar history with a record 16 nominations, the most ever for a single film. The movie, starring Michael B. Jordan in dual roles, blends horror, blues music and cultural themes set in the segregated American South.
Meanwhile, Paul Thomas Anderson’s political drama One Battle After Another, led by Leonardo DiCaprio, has been a major awards-season powerhouse, winning top prizes at several ceremonies including the BAFTAs and Critics Choice Awards.
The two films are now widely viewed as the leading contenders for Best Picture, setting up a closely watched showdown when the Oscars take place later this month.
The acting races are also highly competitive. Michael BJordan is a strong Best Actor contender for his twin performances in Sinners, while Leonardo DiCaprio is also in the mix for One Battle After Another. In the Best Actress category, Jessie Buckley’s performance in Hamnet has emerged as a frontrunner.
Supporting categories feature several major names as well, including Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Teyana Taylor.
The ceremony will be hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, who returns to guide Hollywood’s biggest night. Beyond the awards themselves, the event is expected to reflect broader conversations in the film industry, including concerns about artificial intelligence and ongoing consolidation among major studios.
With no clear sweep predicted and multiple categories still up for grabs, the 2026 Oscars are shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable awards ceremonies in recent years.
