LAHORE:

The Punjab government has cancelled the Sunday holiday this week and directed all its employees posted in the Secretariat to attend offices today.

The Welfare Wing, acting on the directions of the additional chief secretary, told all administrative secretaries to tell their subordinates to come to work on Sunday.

Many officials expressed resentment at the decision, aimed at ensuring there is no let-up in the official effort to combat the dengue virus.

An official said the officers will continue with preventive measures on Sunday. They will make sure that all areas are sprayed with insecticide to kill the dengue-bearing mosquito and public places are kept hygienic. They will also come to work for the  sorting of xofficial records. They will be asked to remain in the office till 6 pm, the official added. Records no longer needed would be disposed of, he added. There will be no routine work. Disciplinary action would be taken against those officials who do not turn up for work, he added.
