Fertiliser contingency plans discussed

Committee says urea, DAP plants operational with gas supply ensuring continued production

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain chaired a high-level meeting of the Fertiliser Review Committee on Monday to assess the demand and supply situation of urea and DAP in a regionally challenging environment.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, the meeting was attended by key stakeholders from fertiliser manufacturing companies and senior officials from relevant departments. The discussion focused on reviewing the current market situation and ensuring the continued availability of fertilisers for farmers. During the meeting, it was highlighted that all fertiliser plants are currently operating, with uninterrupted gas supply supporting continuous production. The DAP plant is also fully functional.

Officials informed the meeting that logistics systems are operating efficiently and arrangements are in place to address any potential disruptions. Contingency plans have also been formulated to ensure that fertiliser supplies can continue even in difficult circumstances. The federal food security minister said the government is closely monitoring the fertilizer market and emphasized that farmers will not face any undue burden. Hussain said that the government is prepared to implement alternative supply mechanisms if required to ensure fertilisers reach farmers under any circumstances.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of monitoring fertiliser prices at local and provincial levels to prevent artificial shortages or hoarding. Participants stressed that fertilisers must remain accessible and affordable to farmers. Officials also discussed the need for coordination among fertiliser manufacturers, distributors and provincial authorities to maintain uninterrupted supply chains across the country.

The minister noted that strategic measures are being explored to strengthen domestic fertiliser production and reduce reliance on imports. He added that maintaining stable fertiliser availability is important for protecting agricultural productivity. The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue monitoring the fertiliser market and maintaining coordination among stakeholders to ensure stable supply and prevent disruptions affecting farmers.
