FROMUN ’11: Fun and discussions on local and global issues wrap up
Students discuss the situation in Kashmir, Afghanistan, Palestine and Iraq.
ISLAMABAD:
Students from more than ten schools of Islamabad deliberated on issues of global as well as regional importance, and passed resolutions based on proceedings of respective committee sessions at a Model United Nations in Islamabad.
The three-day Froebel’s Model United Nations, or FROMUN ’11, concluded at Froebel’s International School Islamabad on Saturday.
FROMUN ’11 started on September 22 with an opening ceremony where Ali Moin Nawazish, who scored 22 As in his Cambridge O’level Examination, was invited as the chief guest.
The opening ceremony was followed by a global theatre, in which delegates presented documentaries and plays to highlight the culture of their allotted countries.
Students were divided in teams and participated as delegates represented a specific country in committee sessions, where they simulated discussions on issues of global importance.
Terrorism took centre stage during the discussions, as participants highlighted the need for combating the menace to ensure world peace.
The delegates also discussed the UN Security Council’s position in the prevailing world scenario and stressed that it must play a pivotal role in finding long lasting solutions to global problems. Highlighting the need for conflict resolution, the committees discussed the situation in Kashmir, Afghanistan, Palestine and Iraq.
“We discussed issues of both national and global importance such as the 2008 Mumbai bombing and debated on topics such as the possibility of World War III,” said the 15-year-old Shaheryar Khan from Beaconhouse, who was representing Egypt.
The second day started with a committee session followed by a concert of Entity Paradigm (Band).
In the closing ceremony, awards were given to the best delegate and the best committee. At the end, a formal dinner was organised by the hosts.
