Elijah Wood has made it clear that he does not want anyone else taking over the role of Frodo in the upcoming ‘Lord of the Rings’ film, 2027’s ‘The Hunt for Gollum’. Wood said, “I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive and able,” amid speculation that Leo Woodall could replace Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn.
While Wood has not officially confirmed his return, he expressed excitement at the prospect, describing the project as “a genuine feeling of getting the band back together.” He added that the film feels fun and thrilling, with the creative team aiming to maintain the integrity of Middle-earth. Wood also noted the joy of seeing familiar characters on screen, commenting on the excitement of watching Gandalf appear in the new story.
Warner Bros. originally announced ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ in 2024 with a 2026 release date, later delayed to December 2027. Andy Serkis is directing and reprising his role as Gollum, a character he has portrayed via motion capture since 2002’s ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, all key figures from the original trilogies, are producing the film, with Boyens describing it as “quite an intense story” set between Bilbo’s birthday party and the Mines of Moria.
Wood, said he could neither confirm nor deny his involvement but praised the project as a creative reunion, highlighting the return of many original department heads. He expressed enthusiasm for Serkis directing a story about a character he has helped define and hinted at potential future films within the Middle-earth universe.
‘The Hunt for Gollum’ is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027, promising to explore an untold chapter of the franchise with a mix of familiar faces and new adventures. Fans of the saga remain eager to see whether Wood will officially return, while the actor’s protective stance over Frodo underscores his deep connection to the character.
