Pixar is continuing to lean into its most beloved franchises, with a new report revealing that Monsters, Inc. 3 is currently in development alongside previously announced sequels Incredibles 3 and Coco 2.
The studio is reportedly working on a third installment in the Monsters, Inc. franchise, which first launched in 2001 and introduced audiences to the monster world of Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan. The original film became one of Pixar’s early hits and spawned a prequel, Monsters University, in 2013 as well as the Disney+ series Monsters at Work.
While the third Monsters film is still in early development, Pixar already has firm plans for other sequels. Incredibles 3 is currently targeting a 2028 release, with filmmaker Brad Bird returning as writer and executive producer while Elemental director Peter Sohn is set to direct the film.
Meanwhile, Coco 2 is also in development, with directors Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina returning to continue the story from the Oscar-winning 2017 film. The sequel is expected to arrive in theaters around 2029.
The projects are part of Pixar’s broader strategy to balance original stories with sequels to some of its most recognizable properties as the studio works to maintain its box office momentum. Alongside these follow-ups, Pixar is also developing new original films, including projects like Ono Ghost Market and a musical directed by Turning Red filmmaker Domee Shi.
With several fan-favorite franchises returning in the coming years, Pixar appears to be betting that nostalgia and familiar characters will help drive audiences back to theaters while it continues building new animated worlds.
