Britney Spears is facing a court appearance after being arrested in Southern California and later released, according to law-enforcement records.
The 44-year-old pop star was taken into custody in Ventura County, California, on the evening of March 4 after authorities observed erratic driving. Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) and booked into jail before being released early the following morning.
Officials said the arrest occurred around 9:30 pm, when officers stopped a vehicle reported to be speeding and swerving on US 101. Spears was the only person in the car and reportedly underwent field sobriety tests before being detained.
The incident was classified as a “cite and release,” meaning Spears was not held for long in custody. Court records show she is scheduled to appear before a judge on May 4 as the case moves forward.
A representative for the singer called the incident “completely inexcusable,” adding that Spears intends to comply with legal requirements while loved ones work on a plan to support her well-being.
Spears rose to global fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s with hits such as “…Baby One More Time,” “Oops!... I Did It Again,” and “Toxic,” becoming one of the defining pop stars of her generation.
The latest legal issue comes several years after Spears regained control of her personal and financial affairs following the end of her 13-year conservatorship in 2021, a case that sparked the worldwide #FreeBritney movement.
Spears has not publicly commented on the arrest, and further details about the case are expected to emerge ahead of her May court date.
