Former Rockstar developer says GTA 4 mission influenced mechanics in GTA 5 and GTA 6
Former Rockstar developer Rob Carr says GTA 4’s Three Leaf Clover mission influenced systems used in GTA 5 and GTA 6

A former Rockstar developer has said that a mission from Grand Theft Auto IV helped shape mechanics later used in Grand Theft Auto V and the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI.
Audio engineer Rob Carr, who worked on several Rockstar titles including Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 and LA Noire, discussed the influence of the mission during a members-only interview with YouTuber Kiwi Talkz.
Carr pointed to the Three Leaf Clover mission in Grand Theft Auto IV as an example of how certain ideas evolved within the series.
The mission follows protagonist Niko Bellic and a group of accomplices during a bank heist and serves as a narrative connection between the game’s two downloadable expansions, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.
During the interview, Carr explained that the mission also demonstrated how storylines from different characters intersect.
“All three characters connect in the middle,” he said, referring to how Johnny Klebitz, Luis Lopez and Niko Bellic’s stories intersect during the wider narrative.
“Retrospectively, looking back now, it’s easy to see how that’s the blueprint of the three-player system in GTA 5. Only when you look back at that are you like, ‘oh, yeah. It’s actually really quite obvious.’ That’s one mission where three storylines meet in the middle.”
Heists later became a major gameplay component in Grand Theft Auto V, and Carr suggested that ideas introduced in earlier titles often reappear in expanded form in later releases.
“There will be things that they have in GTA 5 that they will have in GTA 6 that you will look at and go, ‘ugh, we should have seen that coming. Oh, that’s really clever.’”
Carr also said that mechanics tested during development of Grand Theft Auto V but not included in the final release could appear in future titles.
“There are things they did in GTA 5 that they will definitely want to expand on and use as either a core mechanic or a main plot point or something in GTA 6. I’d be incredibly surprised if they don’t do anything like that.”
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to release on November 19 2026.
