Industrial areas endure 8-hour power outages

Drop in gas supply curtails electricity production at KESC.

KARACHI:

Industrial areas of Karachi faced eight hours of power outages on Saturday and this trend is expected to continue for another two days because of low gas supply to Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), which relies on gas for cheaper electricity production.

KESC has informed industrial associations that the curtailment in gas supply from Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) will lead to eight-hour-long outages. Earlier, the city’s industrial zones were running without any power disruption.

KESC relies significantly on gas supply from SSGC, a public sector company, which is facing temporary low gas pressure from Zamzama and Sawan gas fields following some minor faults.

An SSGC spokesperson said gas supply to KESC had been reduced to 154 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) from 183mmcfd as Zamzama and Sawan gas fields were providing less than normal quantity. “Gas supply is expected to come back to normal levels from Monday,” he said.

There will be no growth in the economuntil this problem is solved, or alleviated. No country has been able to grow their economy with no power. This, alongwith the security situation, the circular debt and public enterprise losses are weighing on the econmy and shaving off some 2-3% off annual growth. That is a staggering loss in terms of output and employment that the country can ill-afford.
