Ubisoft has confirmed that a remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag is in development, officially titled Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.
The announcement follows several years of rumours surrounding a possible remake of the 2013 game, which remains one of the most recognised entries in the Assassin’s Creed series.
Ubisoft confirmed the project as part of a broader franchise roadmap, although the company has not yet shared detailed information about the remake.
So far, the publisher has released limited material related to the project. The reveal included concept art showing protagonist Edward Kenway on a boat, but no gameplay footage or additional details about the remake have been provided.
Reports circulating prior to the official confirmation suggested the remake may include visual and gameplay improvements designed to align it more closely with recent titles in the series, including last year’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
According to those reports, the remake could also remove modern-day storyline segments from the original game and focus primarily on the pirate-themed setting and gameplay.
Ubisoft has not confirmed these reported changes and has not announced a release date for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.
However, the company previously stated that a then-unannounced title was scheduled to launch before the end of its current financial year, which concludes on March 31 2027.
At the time that statement was made, the Black Flag remake had not yet been formally revealed, leading some observers to speculate that the project could be released during that timeframe.
The franchise roadmap also referenced the next mainline entry in the series, currently known as Codename Hexe. Ubisoft has described the upcoming title as a “unique, darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience set during a pivotal moment in history”.
Development on Codename Hexe has also seen changes in leadership. Clint Hocking, who had served as creative director, recently left Ubisoft after a 20-year tenure.
Jean Guedson, who previously held the same role on the original Black Flag, has taken over the position.
