‘Scary Movie 6’ will offend everyone equally says Marlon Wayans
Marlon Wayans is returning to one of his most iconic roles and he is not holding back. The actor and comedian will reprise Shorty Meeks in Scary Movie 6, and he is already stirring debate with his comments about cancel culture and comedy.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of the film’s release, Wayans said the new instalment is about reviving a style of humour that he believes has been missing from mainstream cinema. “What we’re trying to do is bring back laughter,” he said. “This is about bringing back comedy the way it used to be. And I think the only way to do it is you have to cancel the cancel culture.”
The remark has quickly gained traction online, with supporters praising him for defending free expression in comedy, while critics argue the phrase itself oversimplifies wider cultural conversations. Wayans, however, insists that the franchise has always operated with the same principle. “We’re gonna do what we always do. We’re gonna make fun of everybody because we’re equal opportunity offenders,” he said.
The trailer for Scary Movie 6 teases spoofs of recent horror hits and pop culture flashpoints, suggesting that no topic is off limits. Wayans described the film as multi generational, aimed at both longtime fans and younger audiences discovering the series for the first time. He credited his family upbringing and the comedic style shared by his siblings for shaping the tone. “We have a recipe, we have a formula that you can’t mimic or copy,” he said, adding that the humour comes from the household they were raised in and the perspective they inherited.
While some social media users have welcomed the promise of fearless satire, others question whether pushing boundaries for shock value still works in today’s climate. Comments beneath the trailer range from enthusiastic applause to warnings that audiences have changed since the early 2000s peak of the franchise.
Scary Movie 6 is directed by Michael Tiddes and written by Marlon Wayans alongside Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans and Rick Alvarez. The cast includes returning faces such as Anna Faris and Regina Hall, with the film set for a June cinema release.
Whether it succeeds in “cancelling cancel culture” or simply reignites debate, Wayans has made one thing clear: he wants audiences laughing again.
