In a dramatic stunt that has stunned fans worldwide, Eiichiro Oda has quite literally sent the answer to anime’s biggest mystery to the bottom of the sea.
In a special video released on the official One Piece YouTube channel, Oda is seen writing down the long-awaited answer to the question fans have debated for nearly three decades: What is the One Piece? The page is torn out, folded, locked inside a miniature treasure chest, sealed within a pressure-resistant glass sphere, and dropped into the ocean.
The container now reportedly rests 651 meters below sea level at an undisclosed location, effectively out of reach until the story concludes.
First serialized in 1997, One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy on his journey across the Grand Line in search of the legendary treasure left behind by the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. That treasure, known only as the “One Piece”, remains the ultimate goal of the series and one of modern pop culture’s most enduring mysteries.
Over the years, Oda has confirmed only one crucial detail: the treasure is a real, physical reward, not a symbolic concept like friendship. Beyond that, he has kept its true nature tightly guarded, fueling decades of theories, speculation, and online debate.
Despite entering what Oda has described as its “final saga,” the manga has no confirmed end date. The anime adaptation by Toei Animation also remains ongoing, with no announced finale.
Until the series officially reaches its conclusion, the truth behind the One Piece will remain exactly where its creator left it, sealed away beneath the ocean floor.
