A former South Park writer has launched a satirical campaign calling for Barron Trump to be drafted into the military as American casualties rise during the Iran conflict.
The hashtag #SendBarron began trending after DraftBarronTrump.com was created amid Operation Epic Fury, which has involved extensive US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran. At least four American service members have been confirmed dead, with several others seriously wounded as the operation entered its third day.
President Donald Trump has faced criticism over remarks perceived by some as indifferent to the fatalities. During brief comments at a Medal of Honor ceremony following the strikes, he acknowledged the death toll could get “quite a bit higher” while also discussing plans for the White House ballroom.
The parody website was set up by Toby Morton, a comedian and former South Park writer known for creating political satire sites. Its homepage declares: “America is strong because its leaders are strong. President Trump proves that every day. Naturally, his son Barron is more than ready to defend the country his father so boldly commands.”
The site features imagery styled to resemble wartime conscription posters and includes spoof quotes attributed to members of the Trump family. One reads, “People come up to me, with tears in their eyes, and they say, ‘Sir, you’re the strongest. Send Barron off to war’ I’ve always been strong. Very strong. Stronger than anyone expected. Some say the strongest ever. And strength matters. Believe me.”
Social media users echoed the campaign’s message, with one writing, “#SendBarron. Would certainly send a message of solidarity with our troops, and gratitude for the sacrifices they make every day.”
Barron Trump, 19, is reportedly 6ft 9in tall, exceeding the maximum height requirements for most US military branches.
