Dates demand peak in twin cities

ISLAMABAD:

Like the rest of the world, Pakistan observes the holy month of Ramazan with religious zeal and devotion.

During the blessed month of fasting, demand for Pakistani, Iranian and Saudi Arabian dates rises significantly in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

According to sources, hoarders in Rawalpindi often create artificial price hikes by earning illegal profits during Ramazan. Traders Sain Ejaz, Haleem Butt and Zahid Khan said sales increase during Ramazan due to the religious importance of dates, as many people follow the Sunnah of breaking their fast with dates and water.

Popular varieties include Aseel, Iranian, Ajwa, Mabroom and others, with prices varying according to quality. Imported dates are more expensive, while local varieties are relatively affordable.

Traders at Bank Road, Lal Kurti, Nirankari Bazaar and the Date Market said a wide range of local and imported dates is available this year. Iranian dates are currently among the best-selling varieties, with most customers opting for them. Mabroom and Ajwa are also in demand, but Ajwa is expensive and not affordable for everyone.

They said prices start at around Rs400 per kilogram and go up to Rs5,600 per kilogram depending on variety and quality. Iranian dates are being sold at approximately Rs1,200 per kilogram.
