Maggie Gyllenhaal admitted she once felt a lingering sense of envy toward her brother, fellow actor Jake Gyllenhaal, early in their careers, even if she wasn’t fully aware of it at the time.
Speaking with The New York Times, the Oscar‑nominated actress and director said, “In general, I am very interested in envy ... I think it’s usually feeling starving, like you don’t have enough,” reflecting on how comparison shaped her feelings while watching others’ films debut.
Gyllenhaal, whose career has spanned acclaimed roles in films such as Secretary and The Lost Daughter, explained that while Jake’s swift stardom in films like Donnie Darko and October Sky might have stirred those emotions, she eventually found perspective as her own creative journey unfolded.
“There absolutely is enough to go around,” she said, noting that reaching out to fellow filmmaker Emerald Fennell helped her shed competitive fears and appreciate that admiration doesn’t have to turn into jealousy.
The siblings both began acting young, Maggie in 1992’s Waterland and Jake in 1991’s City Slickers, but their professional paths diverged before now converging on her latest project, The Bride!, a reimagining of Bride of Frankenstein.
For the first time in decades, Maggie directed Jake in the film, a step she described as vulnerable and meaningful: “I waited until I was absolutely sure that asking him to do this part was the right thing to do ... it meant so much for me to interact with him.”
Looking back, Gyllenhaal acknowledged that early career comparisons were a natural part of growing up in the industry but stressed that those experiences ultimately contributed to her deeper appreciation of her craft and relationships.
Her reflections come as The Bride! starring Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Annette Bening and Penélope Cruz alongside Jake, prepares to hit theaters on March 6, marking both a creative milestone and a personal reconciliation.
