Chet Hanks has said he is stranded in Colombia after travelling without his United States passport.

The 35-year-old actor and musician shared the update in an Instagram video on Friday. “Free me! Free me,” he joked, explaining that a recent trip had taken an unexpected turn.

Hanks said he initially travelled to Puerto Rico for “my homeboy Max’s birthday party” before deciding to visit a friend in Medellín. He explained that he had been using his Greek passport as a dual citizen and left his US passport at home because it was close to expiring.

“Sometimes they don’t let you in the country, even if it hasn’t expired, but it’s about to expire,” he said.

According to Hanks, airport staff informed him that if he was travelling on a foreign passport he would require a green card to re-enter the United States. “I’m literally stuck in Colombia. I’m stuck in Medellín,” he told viewers. “Granted, there’s worse places to be stuck, but I literally have no f**king idea what I’m gonna do, and the only embassy to get this s**t settled is in Bogota.”

He added that travelling to Bogota to resolve the matter was not his preferred option, repeating his plea, “So, free me.”

Despite the setback, Hanks appeared relaxed, later posting videos and photographs of himself socialising with friends. Social media users responded with references to his father Tom Hanks’ film roles, including Cast Away and The Terminal.

Hanks, who has released music under the name Chet Haze, is one of four children of Tom Hanks.
