Dune 3 secures major IMAX advantage ahead of Avengers: Doomsday box office showdown
The sequel has locked in exclusive IMAX screenings for opening weekend

The box office showdown between Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday just got more interesting.
Both films are set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, sparking comparisons to the viral “Barbenheimer” phenomenon.
But Dune: Part Three has secured a major advantage: an exclusive IMAX window for its opening weekend. That means Avengers: Doomsday will have limited access to IMAX screens domestically, with only select international markets potentially showing the film in the premium format.
The IMAX edge could prove significant. Premium large-format screenings often generate higher ticket prices and boost opening weekend totals, especially for visually immersive epics like Denis Villeneuve’s Dune franchise.
While Marvel films traditionally perform strongly regardless of format, losing widespread IMAX availability may impact Doomsday’s initial box office ceiling.
Still, Avengers: Doomsday carries enormous expectations as a pivotal chapter for Marvel Studios, and many analysts predict it could be one of the year’s biggest hits.
Whether IMAX exclusivity tips the scales remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: December 18 is shaping up to be a massive day for moviegoers.
