Tate McRae’s recent social media activity involving Team USA hockey star Jack Hughes has prompted discussion among Canadian fans following the United States’ Olympic victory over Canada.

The US men’s hockey team defeated Canada 2–1 in overtime in the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games gold medal match on February 22, securing their first Olympic gold in men’s hockey since 1980. 24-year-old forward Jack Hughes scored the decisive goal, elevating his profile on the international stage.

Attention around the team continued after the match, including reaction to comments made during a post-game phone call from US President Donald Trump. Trump joked about inviting both the men’s and women’s teams to the White House, saying he would “probably be impeached” if he failed to invite the women’s squad. The USA locker room erupted in laughter. Both teams were later invited to attend Trump’s State of the Union address; the men accepted while the women declined.

For many Canadian supporters, however, focus has remained on the defeat to their long-standing rivals.

McRae, one of Canada’s most prominent pop stars, has been linked to Hughes after the pair were seen together publicly in late 2025. During the Olympic tournament, she did not publicly comment on his performances.

On February 24, Hughes’ brother Quinn posted an Instagram photo showing him embracing Jack following the gold medal win. The caption read, “Golden🇺🇸”. Canadian fans noted that McRae had liked the post.

Although McRae has seemingly unliked the post, screenshots circulated online, prompting criticism from some Canadian supporters who claim the action was undone only to avoid backlash.

Earlier, the pop star also attracted ire after appearing in a promotional advertisement for Team USA ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

An NBC Sports commercial, released on February 3, featured the singer telling a snowy owl she hopes to witness “America’s best skating for gold” and alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn’s anticipated return to competition. While the campaign aimed to build anticipation for the Winter Games, some viewers quickly questioned why a Canadian artist was promoting the US team.

While she was quick to reaffirm her loyalty and support for Canada after the ad, McRae has not openly addressed the US men's hockey team's victory or the social media reaction.
