KMC to establish museum at Chaukhandi Tombs

Wahab directed officials to prepare feasibility report, ensure implementation of project within current year

KARACHI:

In a bid to revive and promote Karachi's rich historical and cultural heritage, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced plans to establish a museum and heritage site at the historic Chaukhandi graveyard. Built during the Mughal era in the 16th century, the intricately carved sandstone tombs of Chaukhandi are considered masterpieces of regional architecture and archaeology, reflecting centuries of cultural and artistic legacy.

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, during his visit to Chaukhandi, directed officials to prepare a comprehensive feasibility report for the establishment of an international-standard museum, construction of a protective boundary wall, and development of spacious public facilities. The aim is to provide improved amenities for local and foreign tourists, researchers, and history enthusiasts, while introducing this historic site at the global level.

The mayor noted that Karachi is home to numerous historic landmarks that were neglected in the past. Under the vision of the Pakistan Peoples Party chairman, the city administration is determined to restore Karachi's historical identity and present its cultural heritage to the world.

"We want to revive Karachi's true historical face and highlight our heritage internationally. For this, infrastructure must be improved, access made easier, and an environment created where citizens and tourists can fully benefit from our history and art," he said.

Mayor Wahab instructed KMC officials to complete all technical and administrative assessments promptly and ensure implementation of the project within the current year. He reiterated that the city administration is committed to bringing visible and positive change to Karachi this year.

The project will include improved access routes, tourist facilities, landscaping, and preservation measures for archaeological structures, ensuring that centuries-old architecture is safeguarded while enhancing the visitor experience.

Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, Union Council chairmen, KMC Media Director Danial Siyal, and other officials were also present during the visit.
