PS6 launch reportedly delayed to 2028 or 2029 as Nintendo considers Switch 2 pricing changes

A new report claims Sony may push the PS6 to 2028 or 2029, while Nintendo weighs adjustments to Switch 2 pricing

The next console generation may arrive later than expected, according to a new report suggesting Sony is considering pushing back the launch of the PlayStation 6 to 2028 or even 2029.

While the PlayStation 5 continues to perform strongly, with more than 92 million units sold worldwide, industry pressures such as RAM shortages and rising AAA development costs are reportedly influencing long-term planning. The report claims Sony believes the PS5 remains in the middle of its life cycle and does not require a near-term successor.

If accurate, the delay would mean the PS6 would not debut in 2027, as some analysts had anticipated. There are currently no indications that any delay would result in price increases for the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

Nintendo, however, may be evaluating adjustments of its own. The Nintendo Switch 2, which has been on the market for about a year, has reportedly sold more than 17 million units and continues to perform strongly.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has stated that there are no current plans to raise the Switch 2’s price, though he acknowledged the company is monitoring market conditions closely amid component supply concerns.

According to the same report, Nintendo could explore indirect pricing adjustments in 2026. Rather than increasing the base price, the company may alter bundle offerings, such as removing pack-in titles like Mario Kart World from certain $499.99 packages.

Neither Sony nor Nintendo has officially confirmed the claims. As of now, both developments remain unverified and should be treated as speculation.
