Sony has confirmed that Jason Momoa will star in the upcoming Helldivers film, which is scheduled for theatrical release on November 10 2027.

The adaptation was first announced during Sony’s CES 2025 presentation in Las Vegas, where PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash revealed that a Helldivers film was in development with Sony Pictures.

By late 2025, Justin Lin had signed on to direct, with Hutch Parker and Qizilbash producing alongside Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment.

Arrowhead Game Studio, the developer behind the game, has indicated it will be involved in the project. Creative director Johan Pilestedt said the studio would participate “in some capacity,” adding, “The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we’ll see.” Arrowhead later expressed support for Lin, telling fans to “let Justin Lin work his magic.”

Helldivers follows elite soldiers defending Super Earth from alien threats, a premise aligned with Momoa’s previous action roles. He most recently appeared in A Minecraft Movie and is set to portray Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The casting prompted discussion among fans online. One user wrote, “Please play the game for at least 100 hours before acting in this movie. I beg you,” despite Momoa previously stating he did not grow up playing video games.

He has said: “My mother, when I was growing up, wouldn’t let me play video games. She was like, ‘Get outside, climb a tree, go skateboard.’ I wasn’t allowed to have video games.”

Other fans referenced the franchise’s tone, with one commenting, “Please make it that he die in the first 15 minutes of the movie, it will be hilarious.”

The Helldivers film is currently the only major studio wide release scheduled for its November 2027 date.
