Katie Holmes is mourning the loss of her Dawson’s Creek co-star James Van Der Beek with a deeply personal and emotional tribute.

Following news of Van Der Beek’s death at age 48, Holmes took to Instagram to honor the actor, reflecting on their years working together on the beloved teen drama and the lasting impact he had on her life.

“James, thank you,” Holmes began in her handwritten message. “To share space with your imagination is sacred — breathing the same air in the land of make believe and trusting that each other’s hearts are safe in their expression.”

Holmes, who starred opposite Van Der Beek as Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek, reminisced about their early years on the show, describing their time together as “adventures of a unique youth.” She recalled laughter, meaningful conversations and even singing along to James Taylor songs, painting a picture of a friendship that extended beyond the screen.

She went on to praise Van Der Beek’s character and the life he built, writing about his “bravery, compassion, selflessness and strength.” Holmes also highlighted his devotion to his family, calling his journey one of a “hero” and acknowledging the beautiful life he created with his wife, Kimberly, and their six children.
