Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong delivered a pointed message to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while performing at a Super Bowl pre-show event in San Francisco on Friday. The band appeared at a party hosted by FanDuel and Spotify ahead of the championship weekend.
Addressing the crowd between songs, Armstrong said, “Quit your shitty ass job,” prompting loud cheers from the audience. He continued, telling ICE agents that political figures would eventually abandon them, and urged them to leave their positions. His remarks came as the Bay Area prepared for the Super Bowl halftime performance by Bad Bunny.
The comments followed public discussion about immigration enforcement around the sporting event. During a press conference on Wednesday, NFL chief security officer Cathy L. Lanier stated that there are “no planned ICE enforcement activities” at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, where the game will be held. She added, “We are confident of that.”
Earlier, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had suggested that ICE would have a presence at the venue after Bad Bunny was announced as the halftime performer. The singer has previously spoken about concerns for fans attending his concerts in the United States.
Bad Bunny explained in an interview that he chose not to include US dates on his Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour partly due to fears that concertgoers could face immigration action.
He said, “There was the issue of—like, fucking ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”
Armstrong has a long history of making political statements during live performances, and his remarks in San Francisco were received with strong support from those in attendance.
